The French Art of Romance: Dating, Courtship, and Chocolate

Modern-day dating has evolved to primarily take place with a simple swipe to the left or right. You might be left wondering if dating in France is anything like it is in the movies. Let’s leave the mystery right here and reveal what it really is like dating a French guy. Now before I divulge into what you are likely to experience with your French guy, I want to make it clear that this one is for my ladies who are not French. You will find that your experiences might be a little different from your typical French woman. Why? Because you will ooze a certain je ne sais quoi that gives you an alluring appeal.

The Accent

First and foremost, can we have a minute of appreciation for the French accent? How is it possible that they can make reading the side effects of constipation medication sound sexy?

French is arguably one of the world’s sexiest languages and so easy to fall in love under the spell of the French accent. Whether they are speaking English or French, the rhythm of the words flow in harmony. However, try not to get caught up in the melody of the words. You really should pay attention to what your guy is telling you as simply replying ‘oui’ (yes) to everything might land you in hot water.

Compliments

Let’s presume you can get past the accent and actually listen to the words being spoken. In that case, you will appreciate the attention to detail and your guy noticing the effort you make. Did you change your hairstyle? Are you wearing a lovely dress? Did you get your nails done? If you change something about your look, then your French guy is sure to notice. However, compliments won’t be carelessly thrown around one after the other.

To make things even more confusing, receiving a compliment should not be misinterpreted as flirting. My French male friends will show their appreciation as well as giving unsolicited advice regarding my look. “That outfit is really nice but have you considered wearing it with heels?”, “You are pretty, but maybe wearing mascara would make your eyes really pop”. Mastering the game of understanding the difference between compliments and flirting is a natural art form and will keep you on your toes.

The Scenery

A French man is unashamedly proud of his ‘Frenchness’ and what better way to show this pride than by giving you a one on one tour of the beautiful region that he’s from.

You can expect him to know all the great spots from the best bars in town right down to the streets with the most incredible architecture. French men are known as being very charismatic, and it is not hard to wonder why, when the capital, Paris, is known as the city of love. Even outside of Paris, they will use the natural landscape of France as the romantic backdrop to woo you.

Relationship

Do not wait for the question “will you be my girlfriend” as this formality is not very French. You also don’t have to fear having the dreaded conversation of “where is this going”. Unlike other parts of the world when it comes to dating, being coupled up is a somewhat lighthearted affair in France. There will not be a grand gesture, and you might be in a relationship and not even realise it. How is this possible? It all starts with a kiss…

The Kiss

Although you might be eager to experience a French kiss… TAKE. YOUR. TIME! The humble first kiss signifies the start of a relationship. There is no beating around the bush conversation about starting a relationship. There is also no multi-dating past this point. This marks the start of agreeing to exclusively see each other. Are there exceptions to this rule? Of course, just like French grammar, there are certainly exceptions. If you meet at a party or on a dating app where the conversation is only around that subject, be rest assured that nothing serious is intended. A rule of thumb is not to be generous, giving kisses. Especially if you don’t plan on going any further and haven’t communicated this idea, otherwise you my friend are now in a relationship!

Bringing a Touch of French Romance Home

Not everyone has the opportunity to travel to France or meet a French man in person. But that doesn’t mean you can’t experience some aspects of French romantic culture wherever you are.

Creating French-Inspired Date Nights

Even if you’re dating someone who isn’t French, you can incorporate elements of French dating culture into your relationship:

  • Focus on quality conversation (put those phones away!)
  • Choose atmospheric settings for dates (candlelight works wonders)
  • Prioritize sensory experiences (music, scents, flavours)
  • Share exceptional food and drink (yes, this matters!)
  • Take time to savour moments together (the French rarely rush through meals or experiences)

A Taste of France: When You Can’t Be There

Living in France has given me a unique perspective on dating French men, but I also understand not everyone can hop on a plane to experience this first hand. After years of living here, I’ve discovered that one of the most authentic ways to experience French culture (whether you’re dating a Frenchman or not) is through the country’s incredible food traditions.

When my family and friends come to visit me in France, I often whisk them away from the tourist-centered cities to the small villages where they can truly experience a “real French getaway.” It’s in these charming little towns that they fall in love with the independent, family-run stores that capture the authentic spirit of France. The small chocolate shops are always a highlight!

“How can I experience real French chocolate without flying to France?” This question from friends back home is what inspired me to create the French Artisanal Chocolate Box. Each box features carefully selected chocolates from small artisans across different regions of France – the same exceptional treats you might discover on a romantic stroll through a French village.

Embracing the French Philosophy of Pleasure

Perhaps the most valuable lesson I’ve learned from living in France and dating French men isn’t about specific customs or rules, but rather about the underlying philosophy: that life’s pleasures (from conversation to food to intimacy) are meant to be savoured fully and without guilt.

This approach to finding joy in quality experiences rather than quantity applies to all aspects of life, including relationships. It’s about being present in each moment, appreciating sensory pleasures, and valuing authentic connections.

Whether you’re dating a French man or simply inspired by French romantic culture, embracing this philosophy can enrich your relationships and your everyday life. Because ultimately, the French art of romance isn’t just about finding love – it’s about loving the experience of life itself.
